Two connecting ponds, total gallons with filters is 1850, my son & hubby put in the filter, using a Beckett submersible pump (2200 gph). The filter consists of four 55 gallon *juice* barrels bought at a junk yard. Gravity fed, horizonal flow, the water enters first barrel using 25 ft. of vinyl screen (for screen door replacement) as a prefilter, the water then goes to two parallel barrels filled with 8" of bio-foam (Eight 2’ X 3’sheets, 1" thick ), they feed into the last barrel with pump which shoots the water thru 1 1/2" PVC to the top of the water fall, 8 ft. of head. Water turn over is approx. 1 hour. For our filter configuration we used Koi, USA, as a reference & Aquatic Eco-Systems for various parts and then advice from the Koi Club I joined.
Keep it simple, keep it natural and keep it clear. I believe in incorporating the filter as a secondary pond. It is able to serve as a settling tank as well as a physical particle scrubber via the plant roots. Fish, in the secondary pool, will muck up the whole thing by stirring the particles back into suspension. I use three levels in my pond. The upper is just for plants and hatchery care, and the sediments build up here. The middle pool is strictly plants, 8 elephant ears a couple of years (well fed fish).
