Landscaping behind the BIOFALLS is another challenge that many people face. The most natural way is to gradually taper your berm out the surrounding grade. This will allow you a larger area to landscape. If you do not have a large area to work with, you will need to build a retaining wall. The optimal retaining wall should be build out of the same stone that was used in the pond so all of the components will go together. Using concrete-block type retaining wall near your pond goes against the idea of making the pond look natural. Unless the surrounding areas have concrete pavers or interlocking retaining wall blocks nearby, try to keep it natural by using natural materials.
If left to my own devices my two ponds would have become one pond with the upper (650 gallon) pond becoming a veggie filter to control the green water. This would have also meant getting rid of at least 9-10 fish. Hubby decided to start reading Koi, USA and we ended up putting an in ground, out-of-pond filter that is gravity fed. The ponds are now filtered with bio-foam. I tried putting some water hyacinths in the prefilter, but the roots got ed into the piping and plugged every thing up. This is how I describe my system:
Believe it or not there are many people who visit rec.ponds that can give lots of knowledgeable information, besides the IWLS and yourself. If you have the answers, please share with the rest of us THATS WHAT NEWSGROUPS are all about. Otherwise, hang in there and see what others have to say then direct them to the IWLS if you think the info. is lacking. Were here to share not get business.
Landscaping - We want our pond to look as natural as possible which is kind of hard with a semi-raised pond - not many ponds in nature come that way. Our raised sides are built with turf and covered with grass and rocks. I have been planting grasses, lavender, creeping thyme along the banks. I plan to plant a lot more stuff this year. I expect the plants that do best will be the ones that can take moist soil and full sunlight.
